Audubon Park Special Event W4A

E-mail Print PDF

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Audubon State Park and the 225th anniversary of John James Audubon’s arrival in the Henderson Kentucky area. The City of Henderson and Audubon State Park are planning many events to celebrate the occasion. Joining in the celebration will be members of the Tri State Amateur Radio Society and other hams from the area. A special event station will be operated from the park during the week end of April 22, 23 and 24. We have reserved the lake shelter for the event. It is a nice sized shelter with a good sized parking lot on one side and a beautiful wide lawn on the other side gently sloping down towards the lake. More than enough room and trees for almost any kind of antenna set up. AC power is available also. ` This event is planned as a casual event. Sure we will be making lots of contacts but at a more relaxed pace. The emphasis is on having fun, not necessarily maximizing contacts. It will be good training for the upcoming Field Day later in the year without the pressure. We plan on setting up one CW station, one voice station and possibly a digital or satellite station. You are more than welcome to bring your experimental antennas or projects to test them out before Field Day if you wish. We expect a lot of park visitors to stop by to observe. It will be a good time to demonstrate and talk up ham radio to the public. For those interested, campsites are available at very reasonable rates. I was advised that one campsite can hold one camper or a couple tents. Reservations are not necessary but I would get your reservation in early if you are going to camp as they may fill up pretty quick as the event draws near. For this event we will be independently self sufficient for meals and snacks. (BYO) You can bring a picnic lunch or there are several excellent restaurants and lots of junk food very close to the park. More information will be given at the March and April TARS meetings. This should be a very fun event much like the one we had at Lincoln State Park everyone enjoyed so much. There is much to do while you are at the park also.
